Asheville Makers meeting April 25

Greetings Makers, we will be meeting again on April 25th from 6 pm to 8 pm at Blue Ridge Food Ventures, 1461 Sand Hill Road at the A-B Tech, Enka Campus.

We will take a tour of Blue Ridge Food Ventures, an 11,000 sq. ft. shared-use kitchen incubator and natural products manufacturing facility that offers support in product development, guidance through the maze of regulations governing safe production of food products and dietary supplements, advice on packaging and label design, and more. Blue Ridge Food Ventures helps people achieve their dreams of getting their artisan food products to market, of running a baking or catering business, making natural products and herbal dietary supplements, and get them into bottles and tubes and onto store shelves.

The location pin on the map below indicates the entrance to Blue Ridge Food Ventures and there is plenty of parking available in the lots adjacent to the building where they are located.

For more information about Asheville BookWorks visit them online at the AdvantageWest website.

Following the tour, we will have a show and tell session where Makers can talk about and show projects that they have completed or are working on. So bring something you have made recently and tell us about it. After the show and tell period we will have time for socializing and getting to know our fellow Makers better.

Jan 31 meeting followup

Our meeting on January 31st was a great success with over 40 people in attendance and many great ideas exchanged and many new people met. We passed out Interested Participant forms and Breakout Group Discussion forms with questions about what people would like to see happen at Asheville Makerspace. A brief synopsis of these responses follow below.

The vast majority of people wish to communicate via email.
When it comes to sharing information, most people prefer to do so by email, followed by a wiki, an in person meeting or lecture, online forum, blog articles and finally youtube videos.
In the Skills Inventory, peoples interests trended towards the metal, wood and electronics. However there were many interested in ceramics, fabrics and paint as well. Some of the other things that were noted included; machine building, gardening, cooking, baking, robotics, smithing, glass, computers, books, printing, and web design.

We will be forming a governing board soon to make decisions on the future of our organization. Stay tuned for more information and notification about our next meeting.

Asheville Makers Meeting Jan 31

Do You Like To MAKE STUFF!

Do you like to make, create, tinker, invent, re-invent, hack, design, produce, construct, manufacture, fabricate, develop and collaborate? Using wood, metal, plastic, electronics, paper, clay, glass, cloth, paint, yarn, thread, atoms and your brain?

Come join others who like to make stuff too. We are a diverse collection of people who have a broad array of interests and we want to meet people who want to share what they know and learn something new. We will be talking about… How to get involved in our organization. How to teach a class or workshop at our space. How to take a class or workshop at our space. How to collaborate with other people on cool and interesting projects. How to change the world!

What do I need to do now?

Meet up at ASHEVILLE’S MAKERSPACE at 16 Piney Park Road Tuesday, January 31st 6 p.m. (Piney Park Road is in West Asheville, just East of Goodwill and Northern Tool, off Patton Avenue.)

Got some questions? Here’s some answers.

  • Isn’t this also called a Hackerspace? Yes! (Makerspace = Hackerspace)
  • Does that mean we are computer hackers? Not at all.
  • Do we use computers to push the boundries of our imagination? Most definiately!
  • What does hackerspace mean? Hackerspaces means “hacking” in the spirit of working on projects that you find interesting without regard to your level of qualification, expertise, or proficiency in that area.  It means learning by fearless experimentation, and figuring things out by doing. It means jumping in with other folks and starting on a project just because it sounds fun & interesting to do. For a more details to the possibilities, see this Wikipedia article.
